Today We Learn

The word "astronaut" is derived from two Greek words: "astron" meaning "star" (as in "astrophysics, astrology") and "nautes" meaning "sailor" or "navigator" (remember "nautical miles?")

Therefore, when combined, "astronaut" literally translates to "star sailor" or "star navigator."

Astronauts are people trained and certified by NASA or European/Canadian/Japanese space agencies to carry out professional work in space.

Cosmonauts, on the other hand, are people specifically trained by the Russian Space Agency to work in space.

The word cosmonaut comes from the Greek words 'kosmos', meaning 'universe' and 'nautes', thus translating to 'universe sailor'.

So they are all just sailors, in a different medium! :)

Interesting Picture

On this day, April 10th 2019, we saw the first-ever picture of a black hole.

That's 5 years ago!

Black hole is a dense, compact object whose gravitational pull is so strong that – within a certain distance of it – nothing can escape, not even light.

A picture taken using Event Horizon Telescope.
