What is the "x" in "x-ray"?

The "x" in "x-ray" stands for "unknown" or "unspecified".

When discovered by Wilhelm Conrad RΓΆntgen in 1895, X-rays were an unknown form of electromagnetic radiation.

The name stuck even after the nature of X-rays was understood.
